(2) The hero, John Murphy, is presented as this dangerous bad boy player character, but he's a young adult author who spends all of his time making cute cartoon drawings and writing about furry monsters. I kept thinking, "You know, that Dan Savage is right, we find enough excuses to eat chocolate, sex is great without added calories." So. (1) I picked up this book right after listening to a podcast where Dan Savage gave a really eloquent rant about why chocolate/frosting/syrup sex toys are - a direct quote here, to the best of my memory - "sex negativity repackaged as sex positivity" - and I happen to agree with him, so all of the chocolate/frosting sex play in SWEET AS SIN put me in a very unsexy headspace. It's a well-written book and it's full of emotion, but there's always a fussy individual element to whether or not a romance really works for you, and this one wasn't for me. Pairs well with: later Madman collections, as well as other work by Mike Allred. I dug the hell out of it and plan on completing it by collecting all the floppies out there.īut that could take some time and I don’t want to hold off on jumping into volume two, which I will do in the very near future. Madman is energetic, endearing and just a really cool comic. I let my friend’s kid read this as well and she thought it was pretty damn funny even for modern teenager standards. While Madman is a product of the ’90s comic book industry, it feels timeless. In some ways, it reminded me of the experience I had reading Rob Schrab’s Scud: The Disposable Assassin or Doug TenNapel’s Creature Tech. Regardless of the presentation, both stories that were included here were a lot of fun and the art was pulpy and terrific.Īllred has a good sense of humor that works well for the character and this series. The second arc is in full, vibrant color. The first story is in black and white with nice grayish blue shading. I figured I’d check out the first collected volume, which collects his first two miniseries. I never had a complete story arc, however, so I never got to give it a real read. I’ve had a few issues of Mike Allred’s Madman in my comic collection since the ’90s. To reach that decision, Bush conducted a White House seminar that included talks with advocates, brilliant ones, on all sides of the issue. And that principle is very much in evidence when he makes the first major decision of his presidency, in favor of federal funding for research on existing stem-cell lines but not for raiding frozen embryos potential lives, he believes to harvest their cells. "If you haven't doubted, you probably haven't thought very hard about what you believe," he writes. There was a growing comfort with the calming release of prayer, a gradual appreciation of the moral truths contained in the Bible.
